Layer masks is the bread and butter in digital image editing. Whether you like it or not, you need to know layer masking if you want to advance your post-processing skills. Make sure you're working in RGB as some of the adjustment options don't work with CMYK. Make sure the layer you are trying to adjust is not locked or off. Rasterise all layers before applying adjustment layers. Adjustments can't be used in masked mode.

Here is my example: two separate layers. While masking the top layer to blend it over top, it will not fully erase. It seems that it will only erase 99%, leaving 1% there. I'm using the brush at and Hard to the max yet there is still a faint line. Any help would be appreciated, I'm using CS5 Photoshop. This is a new problem I noticed....
Nov 12, 2006·A few other thoughts: Does your eraser tool work if you're erasing a layer and not a mask? If not and your eraser tool has totally stopped working completely you can sometimes "thump" Photoshop over the head by exiting the program, then hold Ctrl-Alt-Shift *while* clicking on the icon to start the program.
If there is not a white border, click the layer mask thumbnail. Press D on the keyboard to set the default colors of white and black in the Toolbar. Press X to switch the color boxes so black is the foreground color and white is the background color.
